The Monument House Museum was built in 1830 as the monument caretaker's house. The upper and side room additions were built in 1906 by the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). The DAR began meeting here in 1894, and began to donate items for display in the new Monument House Museum.

War Display

In the museum, you will find cases displaying interesting artifacts from the battle as well as Groton history. The Revolutionary War exhibit, shown here, houses Colonel Ledyard's sword and a painting depicting the outcome of the battle.

The "Attention Universe" stained glass window was dedicated by Jonathan Brooks, who, on each anniversary of the Battle of Groton Heights, retold the story of the battle to the citizens of Groton...every year until his death. Only 14 years old when the battle transpired, Brooks witnessed the massacre of the soldiers in this battle. One year the weather was near hurricane status, and no one came for his retelling, so he shouted "Attention Universe!" and told the story to the wind.

The New London chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution is named for
Jonathan Brooks.

The Ebenezer Avery House, built in 1750, was used as an infirmary for the wounded during the Battle of Groton Heights. The Avery Association opens the house summer weekends from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM.
